The history of Santa Barbara runs deep and spans many centuries. The first residents of the area were the Chumash tribe. Spanish soldiers arrived in the 18th century, which is why the city has such strong Spanish architectural influence to this day. The Santa Barbara Courthouse, located downtown, is a great example of this history.
