Mission Canyon is located just north of Santa Barbara and is famously known for being the spot for the historic Santa Barbara Mission. With a population of just over 2,500, this is a tight-knit community with a lot of character. A residential community, Mission Canyon offers residents a secluded and private lifestyle. Home to the highest peak in the Santa Ynez Mountains, all the residents live in a valley or canyon. This neighborhood is shrouded in trees, making the homes here even more private. No residential neighborhood in the city comprises a richer historical background than Mission Canyon. The atmosphere here can best be described as tranquil and laid-back. 

Residents here primarily consist of retirees and well-to-do Californians. However, it is also the perfect option for those who desire a more private lifestyle.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The Mission Canyon area is primarily residential, but it is just a few blocks away from the bustling State Street. On State Street, you will be surrounded on every side by restaurants, retailers, boutiques, and coffee shops. Enjoy some tasty tapas at State Street’s own Loquita, which guarantees a festive dining experience. Don’t forget to try the famous carpaccio! 

When it comes to shopping, stop by the State Street Promenade Market. Every Thursday from 3 to 7 PM, State Street is transformed into a local marketplace featuring the impressive work of various local artists. State Street is also home to the Arlington Theater, which is a historic theater showcasing films, stand-up comedy, and live musical performances.

Things to Do

Known as the “Queen of the Missions,” the Santa Barbara Mission was founded by Spanish Franciscans in 1786. More than 200 years later, this gorgeous mission still serves as an active parish church. Located adjacent to the mission is the Rose Garden, with more than 1,500 rose plants. Stop by and smell the roses during the springtime! If you want to learn more about the fascinating history of the area, check out the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Nestled in nature along Mission Creek, this museum attracts more than 150,000 annually.

Rocky Nook Park is also located near the mission and provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy a relaxing day outside. From quiet, shaded areas to plenty of benches to trails, you can easily connect with nature here. Rocky Nook Park is also home to the Santa Barbara Woman’s Club. This club is an event rental space for weddings, fundraisers, and retreats. The Santa Barbara Botanical Garden is a 78-acre garden containing over 1,000 species of plants. Talk about the perfect way to spend a sunny day!
